Zhang Hui

Zhang Hui (courtesy name Yiyun, sobriquet Master of Hanhuitang, formerly known as Zhang Hui) graduated from the Department of Traditional Chinese Painting at Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts in 1986 with a bachelor’s degree. In the same year, he continued his postgraduate studies at his alma mater and obtained a Master of Arts degree in 1989, after which he remained to teach at the academy.

He specializes in freehand brushwork (xieyi) flower-and-bird painting, excelling in depictions of orchids, bamboo, lotuses, peonies, monkeys, pigs, ducks, and chickens.

Currently, Zhang Hui serves as a Professor and Master’s Supervisor at the School of Chinese Painting, Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts, Doctoral Supervisor at Thonburi University (Thailand), and Distinguished Professor at Rongbaozhai Art Academy. He is also a member of the China Artists Association, research fellow at the Shenyang Institute of Literature and History, Vice President of the Huaxia Wetland Ink Painting Institute, Vice President of Shenyang Youyuan Painting and Calligraphy Academy, Vice President of Liaoning Painting and Calligraphy Academy, and Vice Chairman of the Shenyang Society for Poetry, Calligraphy, Painting, and Music.

Zhang Hui has participated in numerous national and provincial art exhibitions and received multiple awards. His illustrated work Love on the Hump won the Silver Award at the 7th National Art Exhibition. Hundreds of his artworks and academic papers have been published in prestigious national art journals such as Rongbaozhai and China Painting and Calligraphy.

His published works include over ten personal art collections and monographs, such as The Art Collection of Zhang Hui, Selected Works of Modern and Contemporary Chinese Masters: Zhang Hui, Masterpieces of Modern and Contemporary Chinese Artists: Zhang Hui’s Flower-and-Bird Paintings, and Famous Masters’ Teaching Manuscripts: Orchids. He has also served as the chief editor of several professional art textbooks.

Zhang Hui has held solo exhibitions in Paris (France), Yantai Art Academy, Liaoning Provincial Museum, Beijing Rongbaozhai, and Tomsk (Russia), and has led numerous national master workshops on freehand flower-and-bird painting.

Dozens of his works have been collected by institutions including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, the Military Museum of the Chinese People’s Revolution, the Liaoning Provincial Museum, and various domestic and international art academies and museums.
